6 - Home Sweet Home – Discussing Opportunities
by Lieutenant Bryce Kendrick & Lieutenant Russol Dukat
The lift opened after the computer verified Bryce's identity. He thought it appropriate that only intelligence personnel, or other authorized personnel, were even allowed to get off on the intelligence decks. While most everything in Starfleet was available to all, there were some things that were still only "eyes only" or "need to know".
He had studied the schematics of the deck so he would be able to find the Chief of Intel's office quickly and easily. He didn't want to be seen wandering around, not knowing where he was. Of course, finding the Chief would be fairly easy--he was the only Cardassian serving in Intelligence on the station. Possibly the only Cardassian serving in Starfleet on the station in any department.
He found the office and stood at the door. The Cardassian sat at his desk reading over a few files. He cleared his throat. "Sorry to interrupt your work, Lieutenant. I'm Lieutenant Bryce Kendrick, infiltration specialist, reporting for duty."
Russol had been reading the reports from Armstrong and others when Kendrick made his announcement. He looked up from the reports and smiled. "Ahh, Lieutenant Kendrick, please come in," he said. "Let me get your orders here so we can best see how you'd fit in this new capacity the station has received," he said.
Bryce stood in front of his new Chief's desk as he looked through the information.
"Please, have a seat," Russol said,."I don't like people standing in fromt of my desk. I get a littel nervous," he said with a smile. He pulled up his orders and took a look. " I see here you are an infiltration specialist?" he said asking.
"I am," Bryce replied. "Infiltration is my specialty but I'm a jack of all trades." There was a pause. "I'm not sure if you've had time to read my full dossier, but you may have noticed that I retired from the Marines as a light Colonel after working mostly in intelligence. I just want to point out that I realize my current rank and position and do not believe that I should be given any special dispensation because of my former position." He paused again to see the Cardassian looking up at him and added, "I do, however, want you to know that I intend to bring my full amount of experience to this post and only want to provide the best support to you that I can."
He hoped he hadn't gone overboard explaining all of that, but he wasn't sure how Dukat would feel about him having already worked a full career in the Starfleet Marine Corps, been an instructor at Starfleet Academy and retiring with the equivalent of a Commander's rank. He didn't want to make any waves on his first day and he really did only want to provide support to his command staff.
"Very impressive," Russol said. "I have been in need of an infiltrator since I took command of this department. With the pirate activity in the quadrant, and the news on this Syndicate I am sure you'll be busy. I already have one contact within the pirates, but I am sure we can come up with a cover story to help you out. And once we get more on the Syndicate, I am sure your talents will be more useful there."
"I'm ready to get to work," Bryce said. "With some inside information on these pirates I should be able to get some good intel back here pronto and possibly bring the whole thing crashing down. I'll need to study up on their activity, background and more. It's gonna' take some setting up, but we can make it happen."
"I agree. I have one contact already with the pirates, but it's the Syndicates that worries me," Russol said. "But any way we can take them down is fine with me. If I am not in the office, my ACIO Ensign Armstrong will be apprised of your operations. Check in with him if I am not here. Will that bother you answering to an Ensign?" he asked with a smile.
"To be honest, I don't expect to be on the base very much to have to worry about who I'm answering to," Bryce replied. "My job is out there," he said, pointing towards what he thought was the outside of the station. "I could care less who I call back to report my situation to, as long as they are qualified to know how to handle the information given to them or possibly have to send help to save my ass." He paused, then added, "But I draw the line at calling him 'sir'. Despite his position, I still outrank him."
The two discussed further plans for Bryce and the intelligence department as a whole for almost another hour. They would have much more to discuss, but it was for a later time.
Bryce exited Dukat's office and felt pretty good about his department head. He was also anxious to meet his assistant department head and get to know him.
